Project abroad
A highly sustainable salmon farm.
France is one of the biggest markets for farmed Atlantic salmon in the world. It is a patriotic market and French consumers are willing to pay a premium price for domestic sustainable products. We have been present in France for several years, and are working to get licences required to build a facility with a capacity of 8-10.000 tons yearly production. Smart Salmon’s vision for its project in France is to produce sustainable local salmon that is safe, healthy and tasty at competitive prices.
In Canada we have partnered with Samonix and Smøgenlax for a project of 10.000 tons, similar to the one in France.
Smart Salmon aims to be carbon-neutral, with the ambition to have zero emissions on our land-based fish farm initiatives in France and Canada, and to establish our own Smart Salmon consumer brand products.
We have a preliminary design of the facility and are aiming to start building abroad within 2 years. The facility is designed to produce from eggs to full-grown salmon and it includes a process department for its own consumer brand products all under one roof – complete with its own wastewater and sludge treatment units where the only outlet will be cleansed water.
Smart Salmon ambition is a land-based farm that is self-sufficient and fully-circular. Solar panels will provide the facility with clean energy. In addition, we are planning to bring sludge, waste from the salmon production to biogas plant, to recycle sludge into methane or hydrogen, and convert it to electric power.
Land-based salmon production in RAS (recirculating aquaculture systems) is a very sustainable way of producing proteins; see under, figures from the ESG report:
