Project France

A highly sustainable salmon farm.

A 8.000 t salmon farm 4 hr from Paris
and close to markets in central Europe.
Smart Salmon - smart - flexible - sustainable - land-based salmon farm

France is the second largest market for farmed Atlantic salmon in the world. It is a patriotic market and French consumers are willing to pay a premium price for domestic sustainable products. With our project in France, we deal with these issues. Smart Salmon’s vision for its project in France is to produce sustainable local salmon that is safe, healthy and tasty at competitive prices.

Food safety is a high priority when choosing seafood, and transportation affects the products freshness. We have 100 acres to build a facility of 50.000 m² in Guingamp, Brittany, only 4 hrs away from Paris restaurants, and still close to other markets in central Europe.

Smart Salmon - smart - flexible - sustainable - land-based salmon farm

Background

Smart Salmon aims to be carbon-neutral, with the ambition to have zero emissions on our land-based fish farm in France and to establish our own Smart Salmon consumer brand products in France and Europe.

We have a preliminary design of the facility, and are now working with our French partners to be granted all licenses and building permits for 8.000 tonnes of salmon. It is designed to produce from eggs to full-grown salmon and it includes a process department for its own consumer brand products all under one roof – complete with its own wastewater and sludge treatment units where the only outlet will be cleansed water.

Details

Smart Salmon ambition is a land-based farm that is self-sufficient and fully-circular. Solar panels will provide the facility with clean energy. In addition awe are planning to bring sludge, waste from the salmon production to biogas plant, to recycle sludge into methane or hydrogen, and convert it to electric power.

Land-based salmon production in RAS (recirculating aquaculture systems) is a very sustainable way of producing proteins; see under, figures from the ESG report:

  • very low CO2-e : 4,1 for production of salmon in RAS
  • extremely effective use of freshwater; 20,5 l/kg salmon produced in RAS
  • Very efficient land use; 4,9 m2 pr kg produced salmon is the norm for production of salmon in RAS
  • Very high conversion ratio of feed: 1,0 – 1,2 for salmon production in RAS
